The Chantaco Golf Course, a 4-star establishment, offers an 18-hole course spanning 5833 meters with a PAR of 70. It has been open since 1928 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, 64 - Pyrénées Atlantiques. Created by René Thion de la Chaume and designed by the English architect Harry Colt, the course is divided into two parts. The first part is hilly and set amidst the forest, while the second is flatter with a few water obstacles, making it accessible to players of all levels.
Located at the foot of the Rhune mountain, the golf course is set in an exceptional environment cherished by the Basques. It features a varied layout that winds through a remarkable wooded area with numerous tree species. The front nine is slightly hilly, while the back nine is adorned with water hazards, allowing players to showcase various skills, from long shots to precision plays.
Chantaco has produced notable French professional golfers such as Raymond and Jean Garaialde, Dominique Larretche, and Bernard Pascassio. The quality of the course has attracted the attention of organizers of the French Women's Open, which Chantaco hosted for seven years (2012 to 2017) and aims to host again after renovations.
The golf course has always been managed by a member of the Lacoste family. Currently led by Jean-Marie Lacoste, the aim is to position Chantaco among the best golf courses in France, open to all, and to make it a must-visit destination in the Basque Country, as it was in the time of its grandparents.
Since 2018, significant investments have been made to enhance the exceptional course. Jean-Marie Lacoste aims to improve playing conditions year-round and enhance the quality of the course. A €4 million investment plan includes improving fairway drainage, resizing certain greens, enhancing tee comfort, and creating paths for golf carts. Additionally, the remarkable clubhouse will be renovated, highlighting its Art Deco architecture from the 1930s.
