CZECH GOLF COURSES FROM 1990 TO 2022

In collaboration with Frank Lébl, Czech golf professional since 1968 and correspondent for the occasion with GolfStars, we offer you a golfing overview of this European country that comes out of the beaten fairways! Also a collector, we let you judge on the photo below!

The number of golf courses in the Czech Republic is 97 golf courses or places where this sport is practiced. 2 spots offer 36 holes, 4 golf courses offer 27 holes, 48 golf courses offer 18 holes and 42 golf courses have 9-hole courses, i.e. almost half of the golf course (in France, there are 184 9-hole golf courses in 2022, i.e. 30 % of the park and 435 golf courses of 18 holes or more).

56 golf courses with 9 holes or more offer accommodation, i.e. more than half of the park (In France, there are 207 golf courses out of 612 courses of 9 or 18 holes which offer even simple accommodation) Unfortunately, 4 courses have been closed circa 2010. About half are 18+ hole courses and a quarter of the 9 hole courses offer only 6 holes.

Most golf courses in the Czech Republic are near major cities such as Prague, Pilsen, Ostrava, Brno, Karlovy Vary, Liberec. Today the Czech Republic has about 54,000 golfers, or about 0.5% of the population (11 million). Playing golf in the Czech Republic is quite expensive, as for example in comparison skiing, ice hockey, tennis. Most golfers prefer 18 hole courses, club members play 9 holes in most cases. Affluent people prefer 18-hole courses by discovering those of the Czech Republic but also those in Europe and around the world.

At the same time, the standard of living is quite low with a lack of time and money; a large number of players, as well as young people, stop after 2-3 years of golf. Many young people are very good when they are students (40 students in American universities at the moment); when they return to the Czech Republic and start working, they no longer have time to maintain a good level of golf. This is the main reason why the Czech Republic does not have too many good players on the professional circuits. The highlight of Czech golf comes mainly from our top pros, O.Lieser and K.Spilkova, with the participation in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Czech Republic has the most golf courses among post-communist countries; in comparison, Poland has about 40 golf courses, Hungary 30 golf courses, Slovakia 25 golf courses, some of which are excellent golf courses!

THE BIRTH OF GOLF IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC FROM 1904 TO 1989

Central European country of 11 million inhabitants rich in castles, national beers and a long long history. Prague is the capital that you absolutely have to visit for the wealth of its stones: its 9th century Prague castle, its medieval old town and its Charles bridge lined with statues. Český Krumlov, a small town in South Bohemia is renowned for its many Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance buildings, most of which house restaurants and shops.

Annual weather: continental climate with moderately hot summers around 24°C; rather cold winters with often negative temperatures. Precipitation is present throughout the year but more particularly between May and September.
